Here are several ideas for community service.
NICU Blanket – Used as a soft sheet under the babies in incubators.
Size is approximately 18″x22″. Use 1⁄2 yard of flannel fabric for top & back. Cut in half and sew the two pieces together pillow case style. No batting is needed. Turn right side out and top stitch 1⁄2 inch along four sides. Can be pieced, but should all be flannel. A slightly larger blanket with a size of 20″x24″ can also be made.
Child Quilt – A good size is 36″x36″. Use 100% cotton fabric. Cut 25 six inch squares and arrange in 5 rows, 5 across. Cut and sew on 5 inch borders. Add batting and sew pillowcase style as above or sew together with traditional binding. This size needs machine quilting in the ditch or any design you prefer.
Lap Quilt – Not larger than 36” x 48”. It should be able to fit over a person sitting in wheelchair.
Knit or Crochet Patient Blankets – Size: 30″ x 40″ . For men and women, in cheerful neutral colors.
Fidget Blankets for Dementia Patients – Size: 8″ x 12″ . Items added to blanket must be sewn on. NO buttons or beads.
